We’re SO excited to welcome our first EVER Youth Board at Chester Zoo. This dynamic group of young people from a multitude of backgrounds, are on a mission to empower young people to take action for wildlife.

What’s your role on the Youth Board?

I am a new member of the youth board and looking forward to my involvement with the Zoo.

What does the zoo mean to you?

Chester Zoo has always been an important place to me. It has helped foster my interest in the natural world and allowed me to learn more about environmentalism, conservation science, and animal husbandry. From commendable conservation programs to insightful engagement events, I see Chester Zoo as a place of real value for everyone. My favourite place at the Zoo would have to be the elephant habitat – I can spend hours there!

How have you supported the zoo, whether that be recently or over a longer time period?

I have been a member of the zoo throughout my life and adopted a few animals along the way. In 2016, I wrote to Mark Pilgrim to ask about work experience – a couple of months later I enjoyed a week with the guest experience team. I have provided tours around the zoo to local schools and always made room in my calendar to attend lectures, events, and activities at the Zoo.

Why do you feel so connected and passionate about the zoo and it’s work?

I feel passionate about the zoo and its work due to the current state of our planetary system. A biodiversity crisis twinned with a climate crisis endangers the human species. The natural world underpins human existence and creates our culture and identity. I, therefore, see the work that the zoo is doing as incredibly important not only to further research and conservation strategy in the field but to help reconnect our species with the natural world, which we are very much a part of.

What do you hope to achieve in your role on the Chester Zoo Youth Board?

As a member of the youth board, I would like to bring energy, enthusiasm, and new ideas to meetings, decisions, and events. I look forward to working with like-minded people to make the zoo and its work more effective, inclusive, and impactful.
